HELPING THE ORPHANS

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Another year is quickly coming to a close, and all of a sudden Xmas is again in sight and it may be a good time to consider if you can genuinely help others that are in dire need.

Many of you already know that I run a not for profit charity, Fishers of Men Ministry that helps families and orphans in need in the Philippines.

Since last year we have completed the new Boy’s dormitory at Bethel Orphanage and our farming projects are now well advanced. We bought acreage just 10 klms from Surigao City on the island of Mindanao, and have established a goat herd with 53 breeders which delivers milk to the orphanage and the local school. The plan is for a stable herd of approximately 100 goats which can then also be sold for meat once the numbers increase as well as supply the milk. This will give sustainable income and food sources over a long time.
It’s along the lines of the old adage “Buy a man a fish and he will eat for a day, but buy him a fishing rod and he will eat for a lifetime”.

We also have established a small college for students that cannot afford to go to university.  The program offers advanced subjects and scholarships to recognised colleges outside of the student’s home towns. Our first 5 graduates have come through the program in July with flying colours.

Our other farming project is a rice farm, adjacent to the goat farm. We have just completed the harvest and supplied rice to the orphanage and many local families who live below the poverty line and can sometimes go several days without food.

We also delivered rice, water, clothes and building materials to the earthquake ravaged villages around Surigao that lost much of their homes, belongings and livestock.

Of course all this requires funds to run and we are always in need of help as the numbers of children and needy families never decreases, they only ever go up.
